Dear God, I’m Hurting: Journaling Through Heartbreak with Faith

When Words Fail, Write Anyway

There were days I couldn’t pray.
Not because I didn’t believe—but because the pain didn’t have language.
I’d sit in silence, heart pounding, throat tight, and all I could whisper was:

“God, I’m hurting.”

That’s where journaling can step in.

It can become your lifeline. Your safe space. Your place to speak without being judged, fixed, or rushed.

Why Journaling Is So Powerful After Heartbreak

Whether your heart was broken by divorce, betrayal, or emotional exhaustion—you’re carrying a lot.
Thoughts swirling. Emotions stacking up. Sleepless nights. Guilt. Anger. Confusion.

Writing helps you:

  • Release what’s trapped inside

  • Process what you can’t yet speak out loud

  • Connect with God in an unfiltered way

  • Track your growth, even when it feels invisible

And no—your journal doesn’t need to be pretty or poetic.
Some of mine looked like scribbles. Some were just doodles. Some had glitter. Some had mug stains and tear marks.
But each page became part of my healing.

My First “Dear God” Letter

I remember the first time I wrote these words:

“Holy Spirit… HELP!”

That was it.
No fancy opening. No deep theology. Just truth. Raw, uncomfortable truth.

And as I wrote, I felt a shift.
Not instant healing, but presence.
I knew God was reading between the… letters.

What Should You Write About?

Honestly? Whatever’s real.

Try starting with:

  • “God, I’m angry because…”

  • “Today I felt strong when…”

  • “I wish I could tell [my ex] that…”

  • “The hardest part of this has been…”

This isn’t for anyone else’s eyes. You don’t need grammar. Just grace.

💛 A Simple Step: Try This Tonight

Before bed, open a journal (or your phone’s notes app) and write:

“Dear God, I’m hurting because…”

Let it flow. No edits. No judgment.

Then close it.
Whisper,
“Thank You for holding this for me.”
And rest, knowing He is.
