Breaking the Strong Black Woman Myth 🙅🏾‍♀️: You Don’t Have to Hold It All Together
When “Strong” Becomes a Burden
Let me ask you something.
Have you ever cried silently in the bathroom, wiped your face, and walked out like nothing happened?
Because people were depending on you.
Because “you’re the strong one.”
Because you didn’t want to be “dramatic.”
Yep. Same here. 🙋🏾‍♀️
Black women are often expected to carry everything: the house, the kids, the faith, the pain, the secrets…
And while strength is beautiful, unrelenting strength is a weight we were never meant to bear alone.
When I Hit My Wall (And What Broke Me Open)
There was a season—right after my divorce—when I refused to cry in public.
I showed up smiling. Took care of everybody else. Answered every “how are you?” with,
“I’m fine. Just trusting God.”
I wasn’t lying. I was trusting God.
But I wasn’t fine.
And one day, I cracked. Alone, in my car, listening to worship music.
The tears came like a flood.
Not because something bad happened—but because I was tired of pretending.
That moment was one of many breaking points to come. But it was also the start of my breakthrough.
Because it’s in our weakness that God’s strength shows up (2 Cor. 12:9).
Not in our pretending.
You Don’t Have to Do This Alone 🤝
The enemy loves isolation.
He wants us to think we’re the only ones who’ve ever felt this tired, this forgotten, this ashamed.
But you’re not alone, sis.
There’s a sisterhood of women just like you—faithful, funny, messy, healing.
And you deserve a support system that holds space for your tears and your testimony.
đź’ˇ A Better Way to Be Strong
Here’s what I’ve learned:
Strength is asking for help.
Strength is saying “I’m not okay.”
Strength is booking a therapy session and praying.
Strength is resting without guilt.
You don’t earn gold stars in heaven for burning out.

đź’› A Simple Challenge for This Week
Pick one day this week to do nothing but rest.
No catching up. No fixing. No being strong.
Take a walk. Read something light. Cry if you need to. Laugh if you can.
And remind yourself:
You’re not less of a woman when you stop trying to hold it all together.
You’re just more human.
And that’s holy too.
